Ihave put off writing a review for Little Aussie Bakery for several months, as we continued to dine there, attend special functions, and experience Rita's new offerings as they evolve. I usually write with the intention of assuring you that it is safe to dine at a restaurant with a chef and staff that has expressed interest and shown experience in preparing gluten-free meals of distinction.
Now it does not take much of an interview or numerous questions to tell you that those rare words apply here: “You can order anything on the menu!” I could just stop here, because I have done my job of reporting that everything is safe to eat at The Little Aussie Bakery and Cafè, otherwise fondly referred to as “The LAB” among my family members. Now this does not mean that you should go crazy and order everything the first time you are there or you will be staggering as you leave!
Joe and I have also enjoyed the roasted brisket, which is the Ravenous Roast served on Thursday night, the pizza on Tuesday evening, and the pies on Wednesday night.
At lunch time we have enjoyed the special of the day which often will be some kind of roasted chicken, based on what Rita feels like customizing it with, along with soup, bread, and salad. Some have chosen the various sandwiches. My husband's favorite is the Big Bloke slathered with garlic butter and stuffed with tender roasted brisket. If you don't want a big lunch, opt for a bowl of soup and a salad.
Rita makes a point to bake casein free and egg free on certain days, to accommodate those with other food sensitivities. If you have other intolerances, it is good to call ahead and give Rita a heads up.
The LAB can be counted on to have special celebrations for just about any occasion. For Valentine's Day they expected 44 diners, but ended up with 77. It was a crush there for awhile, and some diners had to wait a bit, but everyone seemed to have a good time. You can depend on celebrating some Aussie holidays as well.
Rita can bake for your own special occasions, but will need advance notice. Things are still evolving at The LAB, but they have the major kinks worked out. I suggest you go on over and enjoy yourselves. Now that the weather is warming up, you might enjoy dining on the porch out front. They are open every day. (AB April 2007)
