It's been a little over six years since I was diagnosed with celiac disease, and the same length of time has gone by since my husband and I have journeyed to Port Aransas. It's always been one of our favorite vacation spots. We've missed it. But with one thing or another, we just haven't driven to that wonderful spot on the coast.
All that changed last month. We packed-up the car and headed out, longing for the feel of sand between our toes. Since we had rented a condo for a few days, meals were not a problem. The only time we planned on eating out was in the evening for dinner. And the restaurant chosen was the one we had enjoyed in the past for its quiet elegance and great food.
Thankfully “Marcel's” was still standing and going strong. Owned and operated by a wonderful German man, whom the restaurant is named for, the eatery is small and charming. White tablecloths, candles, soft music, dim lighting, and little nooks where you can enjoy a quiet conversation are part of the ambience. But the real test came when we prepared to order. Could my diet restrictions be met? We'd never had to worry about that in the past.
Marcel, I forgot to mention, is also the chef. He immediately came to our table after hearing from the waiter that I had some food allergy concerns. He listened carefully, asking questions when he needed clarification, and then smiled and said in his wonderful German accent, ≴I can prepare a perfect meal for you!≵ And he did just that. The salad was exceptional. Butterleaf lettuce that was topped with grated carrots and coleslaw, for which I used olive oil and balsamic vinegar as dressing, was our beginning to this meal. Fresh from the sea grilled Amberjack, with an avocado salsa on the side, lightly sautéed asparagus in butter and olive oil, and a flavorful Arborio rice were what we enjoyed next. We were way too full to consider dessert, but Marcel assured us that he could whip something up that would be gluten free.
This meal was so delicious that we went back all three evenings that we were on the island. Marcel came out from the kitchen to visit with us each time. He said that he is very familiar with varied dietary restrictions, so he is used to accommodating these needs. The only thing that would cause a problem for him is if someone came to the restaurant on a weekend when he is extremely busy. That makes it much more difficult to give the personal attention that he likes to provide.
If you happen to visit this little haven, you won't be disappointed! (OM September 2003)
