Fralo’s is a popular pizzeria out at Leon Springs which has many devoted regulars. A few years ago, one of those regulars had a family member diagnosed with celiac, and they began bringing Whole Food pizza crusts for Fralo’s to prepare and bake for them. Next the owner took it to another level and added a gluten-free pizza to the menu that is made on a large Portobello mushroom cap called Porta Pizza. Last year, Fralo’s began offering crusts prepared by GF Kneads. This is an Austin company, and their pizza crust is casein free and soy free but does have egg in it.
Frank and Lori Hakspiel are the owners. They tell me that now that they offer a gluten-free pizza, their sales have increased every month. The gluten-free crusts topped with Fralo’s signature toppings have become very popular. It is priced a little higher than the regular pizzas.
Fralo’s has a selection of fresh-made salads to go with your pizza. Ask about the ingredients when you order a salad and remind them to leave off the croutons.
Fralo’s has a front porch, outdoor dining, and live music Thursdays through Sunday. See the Web site or call to find out the hours they are open. Fralo’s now has a beer and wine license, and Bard’s Tale Beer is available to wash down that gluten-free pizza. Pet friendly. (AB September 2010)
