In March 2007, 55 members of Alamo Celiac GIG dined at the Maudie’s Hacienda location for the introduction of Maudie’s gluten-free menu. Maudie’s is a popular Austin restaurant for Tex-Mex and margaritas in a casual atmosphere. Maudie’s now has a two page gluten-free menu and can even handle gluten-free catering.
Because training kitchen staff regarding cross-contamination and servers on how to place a gluten-free order is so important, Maudie’s introduced the menu one restaurant at a time. This gave them an opportunity to do staff training at each location as the menu was introduced.
The chips available at Maudie’s are not gluten free. They are working with a local company to provide gluten-free chips in the future, but for now the chips are off limits. This also means that if you order the Tortilla Soup you need to specify that they serve it without chips.
There is a message across the top of the gluten-free menu asking that when you place your order you specify that you are ordering the gluten-free version. This is really important. Many of the menu items have identical names as items on the main menu but slight alterations have been made to make this version gluten free. You want to make sure you receive the gluten-free version.
As the mother of a celiac child, I love the fact that this includes a gluten-free children’s menu. Your typical restaurant fare for children is pizza, macaroni, and chicken strips. None of which are appropriate for a celiac. So it is refreshing to have the option to order off the children’s menu. (OM 06/07)
