About Us

Alamo Celiac GIG® is a Branch of the Gluten Intolerance Group® of North America, also known as GIG®, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The mission of the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America is to provide support to persons with gluten intolerances, including celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, and other gluten sensitivities, in order for them to live healthy lives. As a GIG branch, Alamo Celiac GIG helps to fulfill GIG’s mission on a local and regional level through programs tailored to our communities.

Members of Alamo Celiac GIG are also members of and may participate in the meetings of our three support groups: Alamo Celiac Austin, Alamo Celiac San Antonio, and Alamo Celiac Corpus Christi. Each of these support groups has its own chair and other officers. The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter whether you live in one of the metropolitan areas or in one of the smaller communities of Central and South Texas; your membership in Alamo Celiac GIG makes you eligible to take part in any events hosted by any of our support groups.

Alamo Celiac GIG provides the central structure for our three support groups and for members who are outside the Austin, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio metropolitan areas. These branch-wide responsibilities include those pertaining to membership, defensive dining, treasurer, database, newsletter, and Web site.

Members of Alamo Celiac GIG exchange information and discuss medical and dietary topics relating to gluten sensitivity at our support group meetings and through our branch newsletter. We have speakers at some meetings, but the most important thing we provide is an opportunity for people with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or dermatitis herpetiformis to visit with one another, ask questions, learn more about their disease and the gluten-free diet, and share recipes and experiences.

Every issue of our monthly newsletter, Alamo Celiac, is filled with information and articles we hope you will find interesting and useful. Our objective is to help our members as they progress from “newly diagnosed; never heard of celiac disease” to a depth of knowledge that enables them to protect their health or the health of the celiac member or members of their families from the debilitating effects of undiagnosed, untreated celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or dermatitis herpetiformis. We also provide tips on living gluten free, let you know about new gluten-free products and sources, share experiences and recipes, help you dine out and travel gluten free, and try to keep you coming back for more!

A diagnosis of celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or dermatitis herpetiformis is not the end of the world. Alamo Celiac GIG provides information to the newly diagnosed through our New Member Packet about just what changes they need to make in their diet to return to and maintain their good health. New members also receive a copy of our Alamo Celiac Cookbook. If you would like our help in finding your way through the “gluten thicket”, you will find a Membership Form on our Join page that you can print and mail to us with your check for annual dues of $20.
